Abstract: 

In this session the presenter will discuss: What a Wiki is? Why wikis have gained popularity in education? How can a wiki be used as a web authoring tool for students to achieve active and collaborative learning in an online/hybrid learning setting. We'll also introduce programs for creating wikis, show the process of creating a wiki, and share some tips about how to use this tool effectively to achieve your course's learning objectives. Some wiki sites created by students for class work will be demonstrated.

Using Adobe ConnectNow to Engage eLearners

The presenter will demonstrate the features of Adobe ConnectNow and share how this free online tool can help to enhance online or blended teaching and learning from four perspectives including visual instructional support through screen sharing between instructor and eLearners; efficient communication in various formats (text/visual/audio) through chat, webcam, whiteboard, and Internet telephony; active and collaborative learning by providing opportunities for eLearners to work together and technical ease (that is no additional software downloads required but just a web browser and the Adobe Flash Player).

Butler Community College implemented a popular Vodcasting initiative this spring. In this session we will share our research before implementation, the software and hardware choices we made, and our implementation plan. Further discussion will center around what worked well and what we will do differently next time.

Plurk is a social network with an amount of allure and method that is not found in other social networking sites such as Twitter. Not only does it tie them together efficiently and effectively, but it does so with a flawless user interface. Plurking does not only offer the neurotic updates of Twitter, but also an interconnectivity and small taste of every other popular social website. Plurk connects them all and it does it easily and seamlessly. In this session you'll discover how to create and maintain a professional network of contacts in a “Clique” which sends your Plurk to only your group of personal and professional friends.

Attendees will learn to create a Plurk account, begin Plurking, add Plurk friends and create a professional Plurk group for use at their professional organization. Lastly, Plurkoids will share Plurk profile names to begin a professional network of Plurkers from C2C.

Some tips on providing rich constructivist learning opportunities in SL while avoiding the pitfalls. Topics include course setup, handling risk elements in SL class exploration, role playing, events, and activities. Ethical issues include griefing, abuse, false identities, and lewd behavior encountered in SL regions. Copyright and legal issues include using copyrighted materials, transaction logs, object identities, chat logs and trademarked materials. Presentation will be done in Second Life.

With a minimum financial investment in software and hardware, instructors can create visual learning tools for their students. Online students can "see" their instructor while learning a concept. Instructors can create step-by-step video tutorials for students that answer "frequently asked questions."

In this sesion participants will discuss the various tools and techniques used to create Vodcasts for an online XHTML course. We'll discuss the pros and cons of using "freeware" (Jing and CamStudio) software to create screen capture videos plus the advantages and disadvantages of various Vodcasting file formats (.wmv, .avi, .swf, .flv).

Social eLearning? Social Networking Meets eLearning

Social networking applications are the rage. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Wordpress, PBworks, and other applications are growing expotentially. But, can these applications really be utilized in both online and face-to-face learning, or are they merely a distraction? This presentation will examine the efficacy of social networking utilities in the context of teaching and learning. We'll explore examples of how faculty have effectively engaged these software applications for both didactic and auto-didactic purposes. We'll also examine some recent trend analysis regarding the popularity of social networking applications. Users will have an opportunity to generate and use their own Facebook, Twitter, and/or Wordpress blog account during the session. (Time permitting.)
